Most commonly, at the first appointment the patient undergoes a 40-50 minute consultation with Dr. Best, appropriate tests are scheduled and upon completion the patient comes back for a follow-up appointment with Dr Best, who reviews the test results and suggests therapeutic strategies. The tests usually include an EEG and lab tests (by blood sample). Depending on pathology and comorbidity additional procedures may be called for, including: brain SPECT, and neuropsychological, genetic, educational or traditional psychometric testing. Occasionally, a high resolution MRI is also advised. Infrequently, MEG data is needed. These tests are intended to speed up the diagnosis and facilitate the most effective treatment.
Among the types of diseases commonly referred to Dr Best are: developmental abnormalities (such as those on the autism spectrum, learning disorders, Tourette's Syndrome); consequences of head trauma; anxiety, mood, psychotic and other severe "emotional" disorders; degenerative diseases of the nervous system (like dementia); cerebrovascular disorders, etc.
The treatment strategies suggested include medication, brain stimulation, CBT, cognitive rehabilitation therapy, neuro-optometric corrective therapy, various forms of kinesiotherapy (including yoga), pastoral counseling, psychotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
